in 'Power of Youth' contest

Two Homer students are finalists in F Magazine's "Power of Youth" statewide student art and writing competition. Homer High School student Molly Mitchell is a finalist in both the writing and art categories and Homer Middle School student Audrey Russell is a finalist in the writing category.

A celebration for the contest is 5:30 p.m. March 16 at Out North Theatre in Anchorage. Artwork of finalists is hung at the gallery, and the top winning writing works will be interpreted or read aloud by professional actors and readers.

By coincidence, common themes sometimes happen at new shows opening at Homer galleries. This month, that theme is explorations in natural media like clay, wood and stone. At Ptarmigan Arts Back Room Gallery, local artists Deb Lowney and Dan Fischer collaborate on "Sticks and Stones," using found objects like driftwood, beach stones and pushki stalks to create durable art suitable for display indoors and outdoors. "Being Here," Sitka artist Rebecca Poulson's show at Fireweed Gallery, uses wood to create wood-cut engravings and prints.

Bunnell receives Allen Foundation grant
For the third year in a row, Bunnell Street Arts Center has been awarded a $10,000 grant from the Washington-based Paul G. Allen Family Foundation. The grant supports Bunnell’s Visual Arts Exhibition Program which showcases Alaska artists in monthly solo and group shows featuring an opening reception and artists talk on the first Friday of each month.
