Kachemak Bay Family Planning Clinic holds its annual meeting at 5:30 p.m. June 22 at the Community Health Outreach Office on the second floor of the R.E.C. A 5-minute film, “Homeless in Homer,” shows at 6 p.m. today at the Homer Theatre. The film was made by local teen group Lead On! in partnership with White Stag Productions, South Peninsula Haven House, the R.E.C. Room, Homer Prevention Project and The Center. The film also is the launch for YRG, the Youth Resource Guide, www.homeryrg.org, an online resource guide. A panel discussion and community conversation follows the film. Kaimana B. Chow, son of Bart and Star Chow and brother of Kama Chow, graduated from medical school at John A. Burns-School of Medicine from the University of Hawaii, Manoa, on Sunday, May 16, 2015. Chow attended high school at Homer High School for his freshman year and then continued high school and graduated from Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama Campus on Oahu, Hawaii, in 2005. He then obtained his undergraduate degree from the University of Hawaii, Manoa, and graduated with his bachelor of science degree in biology.

Homer Stand Down, May 29-30, is a free event at the Homer Elks Lodge for all military veterans from the lower Kenai Peninsula, including Ninilchik, Anchor Point, Homer, Seldovia, Port Graham and Nawalek. From 5:30-7:30 p.m. information and services are provided for homeless and disabled veterans. From 9 a.m.-5 p.m. May 30 Stand Down is open for all veterans throughout the day, with an opening ceremony with a U.S. Coast Guard color guard and officials from the Veterans Affairs, Rural Health and others. Free military surplus gear is provided.

Amy Jane Velsko earned a masters of science in nursing with a specialization in family practice from Texas Woman’s University at commencement exercises on May 9, 2015. Velsko has spent the past seven years as a registered nurse at Baylor University Medical Center, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and as part-time faculty at the Baylor University Louise Harrington School of Nursing in Dallas, Texas. She has earned nursing certifications in pain management, medical-surgical and bariatric nursing.

Between now and May 31 the Alaska State Troopers and Alaska Wildlife Troopers participate in the annual national Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign. Troopers will conduct extra patrols focusing on drivers not wearing seatbelts and passengers not properly secured in a seat belt or car seat, as well as other poor driving behaviors. Wearing a seatbelt is one easy step everyone can take to increase their chances of survival should they be involved in a wreck, troopers said.

Martin Renner, a local seabird ecologist and lifelong birder, presents a program on Shorebird identification at 7:30 p.m. April 2 in the Alaska Islands and Ocean Visitor Center auditorium. Emily Bailey, daughter of Wally and Teri Bailey, has been accepted into Psi Chi, the international honor society in psychology at Southwestern Assembly of God University in Waxahachie, Texas. Emily is in her senior year, receiving her bachelor’s degree in psychology, a minor in intercultural studies, and an associate’s degree in biblical studies.  Emily is also on the dean’s list. Emily is a 2009 graduate of Nikolaevsk School.

The U.S. Coast Guard holds Commercial Fishing Industry Day from 12:20-4 p.m. Friday at Pioneer Hall, Kachemak Bay Campus. Coast Guard examiners will be available to answer questions and concerns about mandatory commercial fishing requirements and also to make sure vessels meet new requirements.
